Region 6 Summer Camping Conference

The Region VI Summer Camping Conference (SCC) is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for pre-college (PCI) students. These camping conferences have been a part of NSBE history since 1971. As the first NSBE pre-college program, the camping conference originated in Region VI and continues to be a successful and rewarding event for PCI students.

The purpose of the SCC is to motivate students to pursue higher education and to develop interest and skills in the technical fields while engaging in fun activities. SCC also provides an opportunity to introduce pre-college students to careers in engineering and technology through a series of interactive and engaging team-based projects, workshops, and activities. During the conference, students will also get a chance to meet other Region VI PCI students, NSBE collegiate members, and Alumni. To fulfill our mission to increase the number African American students graduating from college, we have also planned numerous activities to promote college, academic excellence, technology, and leadership in an interactive environment.

Academic Tech Bowl

The objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase Academic Excellence and understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering covered in the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE/EIT) Examination. Program participation occurs through healthy competition in a “Jeopardy!” style game show format. Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE and African American Scientists and Inventors history to general engineering and science curricula from the FE/EIT. Each team consists of four (4) members (including at most one graduate student) and one alternate, who represent their NSBE Chapter. Regional Technical Bowl competitions will be held at the Fall Regional Conferences and the winning team from each region will compete for the national title at the National Convention. Teams must register for their respective Fall Regional Conference to compete in the regional competition.

ELIGIBILITY: Each participating team member must be a current, paid NSBE member listed as ACTIVE in NSBE Online.

Each participating team must represent an ACTIVE and chartered collegiate NSBE chapter.

More information on the National Competition can be found at the National Academic Tech Bowl Page.

Academic Resource Diversity

Academic Resource Diversity (ARD) is geared towards utilizing and discovering new and distinctive ways in which academic education resources can be leveraged. There are a lot of valuable educational programs and resources that are available throughout the world that can really help benefit NSBE in its pursuit to Excel Academically that we need to discover and take advantage of. One focus of ARD, is to seek out and discover these new and innovative ways of learning, research them, and determine if and how they can be used most effectively in fulfilling the NSBE mission. There are many programs that could enhance the Academic & Technical Excellence of our society that are under emphasized, under publicized, and ineffectively utilized. As the largest student run organization in the world, it is important as engineers and leaders that we stay on the cutting-edge academically and utilize every possible resource available. Being a non-profit organization that is full of students and volunteers, it is important that we effectively leverage the different tools that are available to us. Part of doing this is seeking out and finding out about unexplored educational areas of opportunity and bringing together different groups and resources to accomplish a goal.

Some of the goals for ARD this year include:

• Identifying community and institutional resources that will help to advance the NSBE mission.

• Encourage partnerships with other organizations geared towards Academic Excellence.

• Teach Chapters and Regions how to establish mentorship programs promoting Academic Excellence.

• Plan events and hold community forums to discuss education and Academic Excellence improvement.

• Identify academically challenged institutions and help to set up programs for improvement.

Just to name a few!

There will be many events and partnership ARD will be taking advantage of this year so please continue to check the calendar and find out how you can get involved!

More information can be found at the National page fo ARD.

A Walk For Education

During every april, teams of NSBE members will go door-to-door in designated neighborhoods during the Walk, passing out literature at local businesses and meeting places, informing local youth and their parents about lucrative career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and emphasizing the importance of finishing high school and going to college.

The purpose of A Walk For Education is to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering and other technologies.

Who will benefit? Students of all ages.

What will we do? Volunteers will walk door-to-door in a predominantly underrepresented minority communities distributing information about area college admissions, area vocational schools, GED, SAT/ACT, NSBE Resources, and financial aid.

Who can participate? Anyone who believes that education is a good thing: a NSBE member, a Greek sorority and fraternity member, a company representative, a church member, and a college graduate as well as a non-college graduate. All are needed in this effort.

This year AWFE was held in oakland, and was a resounding success.
